Sumatra / Gayo
This coffee was produced by a group of 165 farmers from Takengon, a town in the Gayo Highlands within the Central Aceh Regency providence of Sumatra, Indonesia. This region is well known for its coffee and the local economy is largely dependent on coffee production.
This coffee was brought to us by Anthem Imports in collaboration with Craig and Susan Owens at Santiang Exports. We had the pleasure to meet Craig and Susan last year and they explained to us their multidimensional approach to working alongside small producers in Sumatra to improve their coffee production while also gaining the Takengon community access to international markets. Santiang applies their ag-business and chemical engineering expertise to assist in improvements at the village level, to processing techniques, and to quality control systems.
This lot contains Ateng 88 and Tim Tim varieties grown in rich, volcanic soil at 1,500 MASL. This coffee is wet-hulled, known locally as “giling basah”, which is a traditional processing method unique to Indonesia.
Though similar to a washed process, wet-hulled coffees are washed, fermented, and dried for less time before being sent through a wet-huller to remove parchment. This processing method requires careful execution; low density and high moisture content of beans make them prone to damage during processing. The capricious climate here also makes this particular processing method vulnerable to Indonesia’s frequent rain and humidity, posing problems to time sensitivities when drying coffee. This is why attention to detail is crucial in order to avoid potential problems–and why we commend Takengon farmers’ commitments to producing consistently high-quality coffees.
We taste fruit and spice notes, including citrus, cacao and graham cracker. There is a slight herbal tone of rosemary with a black licorice finish. This coffee produces a clean and balanced cup. It is a winsome reflection of refined Sumatran coffee that will gratify even the most adventurous coffee drinker.
