Thousands of small farmers live in the Guji coffee region, growing coffee at high altitudes where the Rift Valley meets the Bale Mountains. Like in most of Ethiopia, growers in the Uraga district are smallholders, aka “garden farmers,” so called because most of them are producing coffee in the “garden” areas around their homes, and often harvesting cherries from coffee occurring naturally on the surrounding land where they live.
The area is rich in history – and rich in coffee. Producers bring their ripe harvests to central washing stations, where the cherries are pulped and washed with mountain spring water the same day. The Odola TebeArowacho washing station was built in 2016 and services the community of farmers whom have been growing coffee in the area for generations.
The Uraga district offers up some of the highest elevations throughout Ethiopia, with coffees that are dense in structure, loaded with fruits and sweetness. These high elevations and dense cell structures mean slower ripening times, which translate to simply gorgeous coffees.
