This unique Sumatra comes to us from the Mt. Kerinci volcano of the Kerinci Highlands. The region is well known for Kerinci Seblat National Park, home to a lush rainforest, volcanoes, mountains, wetlands, rivers and for being one of the two remaining homes of the endangered Sumatran tiger.
We sourced this coffee through Anthem Imports in collaboration with Craig and Susan Owens of Santiang Exports. We had the pleasure to meet Craig and Susan in the past and they explained to us their multidimensional approach to working alongside small producers in Sumatra to improve their coffee production and help them gain access to international markets. Santiang applies their ag-business and chemical engineering expertise to assist in improvements at the village level, to processing techniques, and to quality control systems.
This honey processed Sumatra is one of the most unique coffees to have crossed our cupping table, in part, because it is honey processed and green house patio dried. This lot contains Andung Sari, Sigara Utang, P88, Tim-Tim and Bor-Bor varieties grown in volcanic-rich soil at 1,200 - 1,500 MASL.
We taste fig and vanilla upfront with a very thick and syrupy body. There are notes of dark chocolate and cocoa as well. The coffee has some of the subtle earthy tones one would expect from a Sumatra but is balanced out with fruit and sweetness.
TASTING NOTES: FRUIT LEATHER /// ELDERBERRY /// BROWN SUGAR
