The Gayo Arabica Mahkota Indonesia (GARMINDO) Cooperative was founded in 2019 by Sakdan, a longtime coffee farmer and advocate for smallholders. Today, it consists of 625 smallholder members in northern Sumatra, most with less than 1.5 hectares of land. Within the cooperative, a subgroup of women producers has emerged, whose coffees are sold separately and receive an additional gender-equity premium. Women play a central role in the coffee sector here, though systemic barriers remain; this project helps strengthen their recognition and independence.
The region of Aceh, where GARMINDO is based, is one of the most dynamic coffee landscapes in the world: smallholder farms reside along volcanic mountain slopes among rainforests and near Lake Taboa, the world’s largest volcanic lake. With over 80% of producers in northern Sumatra being women, GARMINDO’s women’s coffees represent both the heritage of the region and the promise of greater equity in the future of Indonesian coffee.
This Fair Trade Organic coffee sings true to what you'd expect Sumatra to be flavor-wise, but with a little sweetness on the end that will keep you sipping down your cup!
